Release: Legendary music label Savoy Jazz is proud to announce
the release of “Judy Garland and Friends: Duets,”
the second in a series of high quality, hand-picked performances
taken from the soundtrack of the 1963 CBS-TV series, “The
Judy Garland Show.” Compiled by Emmy-winning historian John
Fricke, the stellar set features nine unforgettable performances
(six of which are previously unavailable on cd), showcasing the
talent of entertainers such as Barbra Streisand, Lena Horne, Tony
Bennett, Mel Torme, Count Basie, Vic Damone and others accompanied
by the acclaimed Mort Lindsey Orchestra. Also included in the
packaging are rare black and white photographs taken from rehearsals
and tapings of the Garland series. “Judy Garland and Friends:
Duets” is in stores August 9.
“Duets” arrives hot on the heels of Savoy’s
earlier collection this year, “That Old Feeling”:
Classic Ballads From “The Judy Garland Show” --a collection
of twenty songs also hand-picked from the soundtracks of Garland’s
CBS-TV series.l “The Judy Garland Show” was a much-deserved
star vehicle for an artist now considered to be one of the greatest,
entertainers—if not the greatest-- to hit the stage and
screen. The series is much revered for its fascinating showcasing
of Garland’s talent and the many, many stars that appeared
and indeed, paid homage to the legendary performer. This new compilation
provides an even greater look at Judy’s joy in music…and
the heightened level of enthusiasm she achieved in her teamings
with both friends and with some of the most timeless vocalists
of the twentieth century.
Says John Fricke: "Savoy Jazz is genuinely dedicated to the
preservation and presentation of the best of the great popular
songbook and singers, and there could be no better exemplification
of their credo than this release. There are thirty-five different
songs heard during these nine tracks, written by the finest composers
and lyricists of the mid-twentieth century. To hear them sung
‘live"’and with amazing energy, musicality, and
humor by this parade of artists -- led by Judy herself -- is the
very best kind of rare aural and emotional treat."
